RADON
What is radon?
Radon is a colorless, odorless, soil gas that can seep into your home through small spaces and openings, such as cracks, concrete, floor drains, sump pump openings, wall/floor joints in basements, and pores in walls. Radon can also enter your home through well water. One out of every 15 homes has a radon level the EPA considers to be elevated.
Tips on testing for radon, provided by The HomeTeam Inspection Service:
- Testing is the only way to determine if you and your family are at risk from radon.
- When you’re ready to test your home, you can purchase a radon test kit or hire a qualified home inspector to assess your situation.
- Close all doors and windows at least 12 hours before testing and keep them closed during the test period. Residents are permitted to enter and leave the home during testing.
- Place kit in lowest livable level of the home, if possible three to five feet off the floor and exterior walls.
- Put kit in a general use area such as a bedroom, family room or office (Do not put in crawl space, furnace room, laundry room or enclosed areas such as cabinets).
- Do not test during extreme weather conditions.
- Minimize operation of bathroom or kitchen exhaust fans or non-essential exhaust appliances.
- If an elevated level is found, contact a radon-reduction contractor about lowering the radon level. The EPA recommends that you fix the home when the radon level is 4pCi/L or more.
