Dear Dog,

Well after years of begging and pleading, my kids finally convinced my husband and me to get a pool. We just have one question, what kind of daily maintenance does it need? We shock it weekly, but are there things that can be done everyday to help even more?

Dear Mike and Amy,

Congratulations on your new pool (or congratulations to your kids on getting a new pool). There are a few things you should do on a daily basis to keep your pool clean and healthy. For instance, check and clear out the skimmer basket. The skimmer basket helps to catch bugs, leaves and excess debris, so that they don’t interfere with your pool pump. By checking and clearing the basket daily, water will circulate easier and the chances of your pool pump clogging will be minimal. Another thing you could do to maintain your pool is to test your pool’s water sanitizer level, and adjust your water’s pH and Alkalinity levels accordingly. Also, consider adding bromine or chlorine to sterilize your pool—this will help kill harmful algae and bacteria that may be lurking in the water. Annual professional maintenance is also helpful.
